15 November is observed as Entrepreneurs’ Day in the USA, so let’s shine our spotlight on it today too.

The History of Entrepreneurs’ Day
Entrepreneurs’ Day was started in the USA in 2010 by David Hauser and Siamak Taghaddos, the co-founders of entrepreneur phone system, Grasshopper, along with Amir Tehrani, co-founder of The Legacy Foundation.

In 2012, President Obama declared the November of that year as Entrepreneurship Month and celebrated November 6, 2012 as Entrepreneurs’ Day.

The holiday is meant to be a way of showing gratitude and respect to the people who achieved success, sometimes against all odds, and were able to help a lot of people by creating jobs for them.

Entrepreneurship in South Africa
South Africans are known for possessing the entrepreneurial spirit in abundance. Whether that comes from our troubled past where there was no employment equality or even our present where certain restrictions like affirmative action and also massive unemployment still make it difficult to find employment, we don’t know. Maybe it’s in our genes.

The South African economic landscape favours entrepreneurs with a fairly easy process of setting up companies. Although the closed corporation is no longer allowed, setting up a private company (Pty Ltd) is not difficult.

Here are 9 Tips for entrepreneurial success

  1. Have a clear vision of what you hope to achieve and keep that focus.
  2. Devise a clear plan of how you are going to achieve your objectives and get systems in place.
  3. Believe in yourself. Remember what Henry Ford said: ““Whether you think you can, or think you can’t, you’re right.”
  4. Don’t be afraid to take the risk. Jeff Bezos (founder of Amazon) said it helped to know that he wouldn’t regret failure, but he would regret not trying.
  5. Work with the right people. Find a mentor who is where you want to be and hire staff who believe in your dream too.
  6. Take action now. There are millions of great ideas, but success comes through action. Walt Disney said, “The easiest way to get started is to quit talking and start doing.”
  7. Be professional, sincere and above all ethical when dealing with people.
  8. Be aware of your time constraints and stick to them.
  9. Love what you do.
